Why does social media bother me?

To post or not to post

Dear Funny Problems,

I made the decision several years ago that social media was not for me. It simply didn’t bring anything positive to my life. Being a Mom of 3, I spend most of my days dedicated to doing things for my kids and my husband. I would find myself spending the few precious, quiet moments that I had to myself scrolling through Facebook. Sure, it was nice looking at friends photos and to enjoy their exciting occasions. But I also found that social media brought out a very judgmental and sensitive side to me.

I also worry for my kids. These sites can be such a dangerous place. I feel like we set an example for our children and if they see us spending all of our time on these sites, won’t they want to do the same?

But, now that I have been off for so many years, I truly don’t get it. Why do people spend so much time in a world that doesn’t really exist? I feel like people want to present this image to the world that may not be completely accurate. And not to mention, make someone else feel worse about the life that they are living.

Why do I let people’s social media habits bother me so much?

Dear Antisocial,

Social media is a form of entertainment.  It looks the way it does for the same reason that our favorite crime shows and medical dramas don’t necessarily depict a day in the life of real doctors or law enforcement.  The real thing tends to be more routine and the lighting isn’t always perfect.  I don’t think doctors are actually making out all over hospitals and police officers are all dating one another.  I could be wrong though.  I kind of hope I am.

Anyway, people go on social media because it’s entertaining.  Whether or not what their viewing is real or accurate is not necessarily the point.  They go on to see pictures of their friends in the best lighting or to post something that they are proud of or find worthy of sharing.  They enjoy the connection.  Some posts may very well be intended to make others feel bad.  But I think you should take those on a case by case basis.  That’s just life.  People make one another feel bad in person all of the time too.

If going on social media is making you feel judgmental or sensitive then you have done the right thing by deleting your account.  Just because it’s popular doesn’t mean you have to enjoy it.  It’s like that old saying, “Just because all of your friends are jumping off of a bridge, doesn’t mean you have to post pictures of your family vacation too.”

Life is short and precious and you have to do whatever it is that will make you the happiest human.  And let the other humans do the same.

You do you.  I’ma do me.
